Charlton   0 - 4   Brighton

Charlton 0-4 Brighton

Charlton 0-4 Brighton

Table-toppers Brighton ended Charlton's unbeaten home record with a comprehensive victory.

Brighton took the lead after Charlton failed to deal with a corner, Gary Dicker crossing for Inigo Calderon to slot past Addicks keeper Rob Elliot.

Glenn Murray made the most of a defensive mix up before Kazenga Lua Lua fired home a fine free-kick.

Lua Lua then broke away to set up Matt Sparrow who bundled in a fourth in injury-time.

Charlton finished the first-half strongly with Kyel Reid forcing visiting keeper Casper Ankergren into a fine save and Lee Martin firing just over.

However, the second-half was a different affair as the hosts were totally out-played.

First Glenn Murray made the most of a misplaced pass by Johnnie Jackson to finish smartly.

Then Kazenga Lua Lua, who had only been on the pitch five minutes, struck a wonderful free-kick past Rob Elliot.

Charlton had numerous set-pieces but were unable to take advantage of any of them and their misery was compounded when Lua Lua broke away to cross for Matt Sparrow in the dying seconds.

The result gives Brighton their first win in three matches and leaves Charlton languishing in 13th place.

Charlton manager Phil Parkinson told BBC London 94.9:
"They caught us by surprise by playing a diamond - but they didn't hurt us until we gave them a sloppy goal,"

"We handed them some basic goals and that cost us the game.

"I understand the reaction of the fans, i take full responsibility and any fans would have reacted that way across the country."

Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:
"It was nearly perfection. When you play against a team like Charlton at the Valley and the way we performed today, the way we defended and the way we scored goals, you can not ask for more.

"The way they moved, passed the ball and created chances, went forward. I don't think there's been a better performance from us away from home. We were spot on, really aggressive and did the job."
