Charlton   2 - 1   Swindon (agg 3 - 3)

Swindon win 5-4 on penalties

Highlights - Charlton 2-1 Swindon (agg 3-3)

By Paul Fletcher
BBC Sport at the Valley

Swindon won a penalty shoot-out to snatch a dramatic victory over Charlton and seal a place in the League One play-off final at Wembley on 29 May.

Addicks skipper Nick Bailey missed with Charlton's second spot kick and it proved decisive as Danny Wilson's visitors struck all five of their penalties with Stephen Darby firing home the crucial strike.

Bailey has been superb for his team this season and it was a cruel end to a captivating contest that swung one way then the other, played in front of a fantastic atmosphere at The Valley.

Both teams wasted numerous opportunities to win the tie, which Swindon led 2-1 after Friday's first leg. The woodwork came to the men from the County Ground's rescue on several occasions while substitute keeper Phil Smith made several important saves.

As the match wore on Wilson's men looked increasingly dangerous on the counter attack but it was Phil Parkinson's home side who created the bulk of the decent chances.

The Addicks led 2-0 at the break after a dominant first-half display saw the unfortunate Simon Ferry hook a corner into his own net and David Mooney strike a first-time effort beyond Smith from 16 yards.

The match had started ominously for Swindon when first-choice stopper David Lucas suffered a shoulder injury in the first minute that led to his withdrawal.

And a disappointing evening appeared increasingly certain to end in a heartbreaking defeat for Wilson's team when skipper Gordon Greer saw red for a dangerous high tackle on Deon Burton.

But the visitors levelled on aggregate when Danny Ward stabbed the ball home from eight yards and numerical parity was restored when Miguel Llera saw red after dragging down Charlie Austin just before the end of 90 minutes.

With no further goals in extra time, Wilson's men then showed incredible nerve, skill and composure to win the shoot-out and keep alive their dream of promotion while condemning Charlton to another season in the third tier of English football.

There was little sign of what was to come when the home side started the match with vim and endeavour.

Lloyd Sam delivered a series of crosses from the right that tested Smith's handling, while Reid, an unused substitute in the first leg, was a constant threat down the left and drew the first save of the evening with a curling strike across goal that Smith parried before Lescinel Jean-Francois hooked the ball clear.

A low Reid strike was later tipped around the post by Smith as Parkinson's side took control but the keeper was at least partially to blame for the opening goal after he flapped at a corner and Ferry subsequently guided the ball into his own net.

Wilson might feel that the Addicks' second goal was preventable but Stephen Darby was beaten to the ball by Reid, who then cut it back for Mooney to score.

Swindon lacked a cutting edge and had precious little possession throughout a disappointing opening period but they almost snatched a goal deep into the five minutes of injury time.

Bailey missed the crucial spot-kick

Paynter, who did not look fully fit despite passing a fitness test on his hamstring injury, headed over from six yards after Ferry had guided a free-kick back across the face of goal.

Austin almost levelled the tie with a close-range strike shortly after the restart but Darren Randolph bravely blocked his effort.

Prolific striker Paynter was withdrawn after 65 minutes and the momentum of the tie appeared to move further in the home team's favour when their opponents were reduced to 10 men with defender Greer seeing red for his high lunge that landed in Burton's midriff.

However, Swindon levelled the aggregate score at 3-3 when Ward showed great alertness to nip in and tuck a loose ball beyond the advancing Randolph with a low finish.

Charlton rediscovered their attacking intent and Smith, bought from Crawley Town in 2006, saved a weak Burton header, a low shot from a tight angle from Mooney and a decent strike from Bailey.

It was becoming an increasingly engrossing tie and the contest took a further twist when Llera saw red after he crudely dragged Austin to the ground after the striker had got goal side of the defender.

The Addicks dominated the first half of extra time and Scott Wagstaff saw a deflected low strike skim the outside of the post, while Smith superbly saved a curling strike from Nicky Forster and tipped over a Therry Racon effort as all of Charlton's substitutes went close.

Smith injured a leg denying Racon's long-range strike but was able to carry on, although he was nowhere near Frazer Richardson's brutal 25-yard strike that struck the post minutes later.

Swindon had two good opportunities to win the tie but Ward and Austin both shot narrowly wide after the visiting team struck on the counter attack.

The chances continued to come, with Addicks striker Burton inches wide with a shot on the turn, but the match went to penalties and the visitors snatched victory.

Swindon boss Danny Wilson:
"I told them at half time just get one and see what happens.

"Charlton were in the ascendancy but then we got a goal and it changed."

Charlton boss Phil Parkinson:
"I could not have asked any more of them.

"When the big games come my boys have produced good performances.

"At the moment, Nicky is distraught and inconsolable, but he has performed so well this season."
