Paul Lambert has guided Norwich into the automatic promotion places

Norwich manager Paul Lambert enjoyed a victorious return to former club Colchester on a wet but passionate afternoon in Essex that was a disaster for the home team.

Lambert was in charge of the Colchester side that demolished the Canaries 7-1 at Carrow Road on the opening day of the season - and his defection shortly afterwards ensured this would always be a passionate and fiery encounter.

Interest in the fixture attracted a record crowd of 10,064 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium but it was a day of crushing disappointment for the vast majority, who hoped to see Lambert humbled on his return.

A compensation package has yet to be agreed between the two clubs and Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling outlined in the build-up to the match his desire to see his team win.

But Norwich showed a quality and clinical edge in front of goal that was beyond their opponents as Chris Martin scored twice in the opening half, while skipper Gary Doherty, Oli Johnson and Grant Holt struck after the break.

It might have been worse for Colchester, who have now conceded 12 in their last two games, but Wes Hoolahan failed to convert from the penalty spot - although the misery did continue all the way to the final whistle, with Ian Henderson sent off on his home debut for a shocking late tackle on Darel Russell.

Lambert's team have now won their last five straight League One fixtures to keep the pressure on leaders Leeds United.

The home team started the day in fourth and certainly created enough early chances to have ensured a competitive contest but their failure to take them saw Aidy Boothroyd suffer only his third defeat in 19 league contests since succeeding Lambert.

Colchester dominated long periods of the opening half and created the bulk of the chances but nonetheless found themselves up against it by the break.

The very heavy conditions did not particularly suit Norwich's passing style but Martin made no mistake with his crisp low strike from the edge of the area after 16 minutes.

Then, deep into injury time, he collected a through ball from strike partner Grant Holt before closing in on goal and guiding his strike beyond the diving Ben Williams into the bottom corner.

Martin showed great skill and composure as he closed in on goal to keep control of the ball, which repeatedly caught on the wet surface.

Lambert punched the air in delight but the half-time scoreline was harsh on the home side, who played with desire, enthusiasm and a direct style that ought to have been better suited to the conditions.

David Fox tested Fraser Forster with a low strike in just the third minute and the Norwich keeper made an even better save shortly afterwards to keep out Anthony Wordsworth's crisp shot.

Norwich enjoyed a spell of possession after scoring, while an incident that started with a clash between Hoolahan and Marc Tierney quickly escalated and saw four players booked by referee Mike Dean.

Colchester finished the half strongly, with Forster denying Clive Platt and Wordsworth, while Phil Ifil missed from a good position before Norwich stunned the home crowd with their second goal.

The result was put beyond doubt within minutes of the restart when Norwich, with only their third meaningful chance of the game, scored again.

Hoolahan floated an inviting free-kick into the box and Doherty smashed home from 10 yards after the ball had dropped invitingly.

The away fans chanted "we want seven" and the Canaries should have scored another in pursuit of that scoreline when Holt was pulled down inside the area by Colchester skipper Magnus Okuonghae.

Dean had no hesitation in awarding a spot kick but Hoolahan smashed his effort against the crossbar and stabbed home the rebound before anybody else had touched the ball, thus ruling out the goal.

Norwich were vastly superior after the break and the fourth goal eventually came late on when substitute Johnson shot across goal and into the bottom corner.

There was still time for Holt to add to Colchester's woes, the striker collecting a long ball up field before rounding the keeper and slotting home before Henderson saw red in the final minute.

Colchester United manager Aidy Boothroyd told BBC Essex:

"There is a way to win, we've done plenty of that and there is a way to lose.

"We made sure we were beaten by a better team on the day.

"Out of the five goals, four of them we gave them, and that is something we haven't done all season."

Norwich manager Paul Lambert told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"They've got to change their game to certain conditions and I thought some of the football we played, in really bad conditions, was exceptional.

"We came here to try and win another three points which we've done.

"I never actually think to myself that this is going to last forever, but we will do our upmost to get this club up. At this moment in time we've given them back something when they were hurt.

"Chris Martin, 21 years of age, and what a terrific finisher he is with a football."
