Southampton eased past an Exeter side who were forced to play with 10 men for almost an hour.

Lloyd James opened the scoring when his shot clipped Grecians defender Richard Duffy and flew past keeper Paul Jones.

David Connolly then hit the bar for Saints before Neal Trotman headed in number two from a James free-kick.

Troy Archibald-Henville was sent off for a clumsy high tackle and, although a Matthew Taylor header made it 2-1, Pablo Waigo slotted in to seal the win.

Southampton manager Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Solent:

"We were a bit security conscious and didn't step on to them. We started doing things that we don't normally do so it made it very difficult second half.

"At least we finished the game well, good finish from Papa and I'm so happy for the crowd...it was nice to send them home on a positive."
