Dean Bowditch's winner 15 minutes from time gave Yeovil a hard fought victory over 10-man Southend.

Southend keeper Steve Mildenhall made a series of fine saves during the first half to keep the Glovers at bay.

Already on the back foot, the visitors' task was made even harder when debutant Sean Morrison was dismissed for a professional foul on Jonathan Obika.

Scott Murray provided the assist for Bowditch to slot home from close range and claim the points for the home side.

Yeovil manager Terry Skiverton told BBC Somerset:

"We've still got to be a bit more clinical but I'm very pleased with the performance and I always believed the goal was going to come

"We created loads of chances, we won the game, and we're going to keep going for the throat and going for the wins.

"It was a great performance and a great result."

Southend manager, Steve Tilson told BBC Essex:

"I'm so disappointed, I feel we have done enough to get a point, especially after going down to 10 men for so long.

"I thought the lads were excellent in the second half and Yeovil ran out of ideas to be fair."
