Peter Hartley's first ever goal for Hartlepool was enough to secure a narrow victory over Tranmere.

Rovers begun in lively fashion though with Gareth Edds heading against the woodwork after three minutes.

But the hosts broke the deadlock just before the interval when Hartley nodded in a corner from Ritchie Jones.

Tranmere almost equalised when Ian Goodison's shot was cleared by Neil Austin and then Charlie Barnett was red carded for a lunge on Austin.

Tranmere caretaker manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"Apart from the first 15 minutes of the second half, we dominated the game.

"I said to the lads when I first took that over I'd react to performances and not results.

"I was quite placid today because I thought the performance was one of the best of the season."
