Southampton   4 - 1   Gillingham

Southampton v Gillingham

Southampton 4-1 Gillingham

Adam Lallana scored twice as Southampton defeated Gillingham to wipe out their minus points status.

Ricky Lambert put Saints in front with a powerful volley before Luke Rooney equalised for the Gills with an 18-yard strike into the bottom corner.

Saints hit the woodwork before Ndiaye Papa Waigo converted from close range following a flick-on from Lambert.

Lallana finished off a move created by Jacob Mellis to make it 3-1 and then scored with a right-foot strike.

Southampton manager Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Solent:

"We've really worked hard with him (Ricky Lambert), physically and I thought it showed...he was excellent and we were solid throughout the team.

"We looked a powerful side and we need to make sure that on and off the pitch we show the discipline that we did today.

"Even though we conceded a goal we didn't panic and we just turned up the power and saw the game off."

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson told BBC Radio Kent:

"The fans were possibly like me, embarrassed. A lot of the goals can be stopped by being a bit more clever, not let playing go past you willy-nilly.

"A few of my boys have been told they have to get back in their game or they'll be on the sidelines watching."
