Jean-Francois Christophe headed in on the stroke of half-time as Southend recorded a third successive draw.

Southend started brightly and the unmarked Christophe headed a free-kick into the side-netting.

Matt Harrold had failed to connect with a cross when only seven yards out, but rose above a static visiting defence to head in a Stephen Phillips corner.

Christophe powered home a Simon Francis cross before Dougie Freedman and Lee Barnard spurned good chances to win it.

Southend United manager Steve Tilson told BBC Essex:

"We deserved more - I thought it was an excellent performance tonight and I thought individually we were better than them.

"But it didn't quite fall for us to get the winner.

"But away from home, and with the chances we made, I thought it was an excellent performance."
