Gareth Taylor and Joe Anyinsah both returned to haunt their former club Crewe as they got the goals that earned Carlisle a vital win at Gresty Road.
Gareth Taylor put the visitors ahead when Cleveland Taylor picked out the on-loan Doncaster Rovers man to rifle the ball past John Ruddy with a volley.
Graham Kavanagh then hit the bar, while Ruddy denied Cleveland Taylor superbly.
Clayton Donaldson swept in the leveller but Anyinsah nodded in Peter Murphy's flick-on to earn the Cumbrians the win.
Crewe: Ruddy, Abbey (McCready 75), Baudet, Broomes, Jones, Brayford, Schumacher (Miller 46), Woodards, Moore (Grant 83), Sigurdsson, Donaldson.
