Oldham 2-1 Hartlepool

Hughes helped Oldham move up to third place in the table

Lee Hughes scored his 14th goal of the season as Oldham, unbeaten in 10 games, rose to third by beating Hartlepool.

When Neal Eardley crossed, Michael Nelson made a mess of a clearance and Hughes poked home from six yards.

On-loan Latics debutant Dean Windass hit the woodwork with a free-kick before Kevin Maher crossed for Deane Smalley to volley a second for Oldham.

Hartlepool rarely threatened but Kelvin Lomax's own goal from an attempted clearance ensured a tight finish.

Oldham: Fleming, Eardley, Hazell, Gregan, Lomax, Smalley (Liddell 90), Maher, Whitaker, Taylor, Windass (Alessandra 90), Hughes (Davies 74).
