Danny Jackman and Ryan Gilligan grabbed second-half goals as Northampton beat a disappointing Hereford at Edgar Street.
Leon Constantine went close for the visitors before the break with a header and shot which flew over the bar.
Hereford's Steve Guinan forced a save from Frank Fielding and Ben Smith was just wide with a dipping shot.
But that was the best Hereford could muster and Jackman broke the deadlock with a 25-yard free-kick before Gilligan sealed it from close range.
Hereford captain Karl Broadhurst told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"This respect campaign that is going on at the moment - the players are taught to respect the officials, but I think sometimes the officials have got to be put under a bit of pressure.
"We've had two sets of officials in two games now who have been awful.
"Today they weren't as bad, but Tuesday was ridiculous - the lads likened it to a PE teacher who didn't know the rules of football - it was ridiculous."
