Southend ended the regular season with a draw with relegated Port Vale, ahead of their League One play-off semi-final against Doncaster Rovers.
The Shrimpers created the better of the chances but went a goal behind when David Mulligan scored a fine free-kick.
The hosts continued to look the more dangerous team but Port Vale's Marc Richards also threatened twice.
However, James Walker finally equalised when the ball deflected off him after Simon Francis's shot had been blocked.
