A superb solo goal from Nathan Tyson kept Nottingham Forest in contention for an automatic promotion place.
In the 50th minute he latched on to a through-ball from Matt Lockwood before beating a defender and sliding the ball past goalkeeper Peter Brezovan.
However, Tyson had to be substituted in the 74th minute because of a recurrence of a hamstring injury.
Swindon rarely threatened but Lewis McGugan and Junior Agogo went close for the home side.
