Mark Stimson won his first game as Gillingham boss thanks to Dennis Oli's second-half double against Hartlepool.
James Brown put the visitors ahead when he controlled a long throw before firing past Simon Royce.
Gillingham were sparked into action and Oli equalised by superbly lobbing keeper Jan Budtz.
Oli's second came when he fired in from the left and he was then replaced by Luke Freeman, 15, who became the Gills' youngest ever player in the league.
