Veteran Ian Cox headed an injury-time goal to earn Gillingham a 1-1 draw and deny nine-man Leeds a record eighth straight win to start the season.
Cox powered home Barry Cogan's corner after Leeds strikers Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol had been sent off.
The visitors took a 28th-minute lead when Seb Carole headed his first goal for the club.
But referee Danny McDermid dismissed Kandol for a second offence before half-time and then Beckford for a foul.
