Nottingham Forest claimed their first win of the season but the three points were hard to come by at Port Vale.
Forest took the lead in the third minute when Vale full-back Paul Edwards deflected into the net Grant Holt's flick-on from Chris Cohen's corner.
Luke Chambers ended the contest three minutes from time when he headed in a cross from Kris Commons.
Vale's Paul Harsley miscued his shot from 12 yards before Forest keeper Paul Smith save from Ashley Westwood.
