Leaders Plymouth scored five goals in 18 minutes on their way to victory.
Chesterfield were stunned as Lee Hodges slotted in from close range before Tony Capaldi struck from 18 yards.
There was no let-up as Nathan Lowndes scored either side of David Friio's dramatic strike from 25 yards.
After the break, Friio made it 6-0 with a close-range shot before completing his hat-trick with a header three minutes from time.
Chesterfield had arrived in optimistic mood after last week's 1-0 win at Barnsley,
their first away victory of the season.
But that optimism soon evaporated as Sturrock's side quickly stamped their authority on proceedings.
Chris Brandon and Mark Allott both went close to reducing Chesterfield's deficit mid-way through the first half.
But by then, the visitors were already five goals down.
