Cash-strapped Notts County finally claimed their first victory of the season in this basement battle.

Paul Bolland struck the only goal of a tight game shortly after the break when he converted Mark Stallard's cross.

The midfielder slotted home from 10 yards - after he started the move by winning the ball in the centre circle.

Chesterfield had enjoyed the best of the first half, and Mark De Bolla was denied three times by goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall.

But Roy McFarland's men subsequently fell away and threatened only once, when Ian Evatt blazed high and wide from eight yards.

County should have taken an early lead when winger Simon Baldry scooped his shot over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

But Bolland's winner was enough to secure the points - leaving Chesterfield as the only team in the division without a win.
