Chesterfield stay up

Chesterfield drew at Blackpool to preserve their Division Two status.

John Douglas put the Spireites in the lead after 39 minutes, but Scott Taylor equalised for the home team in the second-half.

Chesterfield had started the match fifth bottom but knew that if they failed to beat Blackpool and Cheltenham won at Notts County they would be relegated.

However, the Robins lost 1-0 at Meadow Lane, rendering the Chesterfield result academic.

Chesterfield would not have needed to rely on Cheltenham's downfall had striker David Reeves not had an 82nd-minute penalty brilliantly saved by Blackpool keeper Phil Barnes.

Blackpool - without a win in 12 games - lifted themselves in the second half after an abject first-half show in which they gifted a grateful Chesterfield a 38th-minute goal.

Wing-back Danny Coid played a suicidal pass across the face of his own goal and, although Barnes blocked Glyn Hurst's first shot, Douglas was on hand to put away the rebound.

In the 63rd minute, though, Taylor worked a short-corner move with Richie Wellens and the Blackpool striker scored his 15th of the season with an 18-yard drive.
