1502 GMT: Cardiff kick off in their home city, though their fans only slightly outnumber the 32,000 who have travelled from London.

1503: Andy Legg's outrageously long throw, likely to be the first of many in this final, drops for Robert Earnshaw to volley high over the crossbar.

1509: Kevin Gallen whips in a stinging free-kick which goalkeeper Neil Alexander fists over the crossbar.

1518: Richard Pacquette controls and turns 20 yards from goal, but his shot is wayward and flies into the Cardiff fans crowded behind Alexander's goal.

1525: Mid-way through the first half and chances are few and far between. QPR settle better but Cardiff are beginning to enjoy more possession and are producing some neat approach play.

1527: QPR's direct approach is in contrast to Cardiff's neat play and a long ball towards Paul Furlong is fluffed by Daniel Gabbidon. But the defender is relieved to see Furlong hurry his chance and chip the ball over the bar.

1533: QPR striker Furlong is booked for a late lunge on Gabbidon on the half-way line.

1536: Legg gets down the left and crosses for Graham Kavanagh, whose header sails over the crossbar.

1541: Kavanagh is the first Cardiff player to be booked, the Bluebirds captain cautioned for catching Stephen Kelly.

1545: Good build-up work down the Cardiff right leads to Rhys Weston setting up Gareth Whalley for a shot, but Danny Shittu gets back well to deflect the effort for a corner.

1547: Cardiff finish the first half strongly but Kavanagh's dipping volley flies well wide of Chris Day's goal.

1549: The half-time whistle sounds with neither side having made a breakthrough in a hard-fought first 45 minutes.

1607: QPR get the second half under way and are immediately on the attack.

1610: Furlong rolls the ball back to Gallen, whose shot is straight at Cardiff keeper Alexander.

1611: QPR's bright start to the second half continues but Furlong wastes his chance as he fires wildly over.

1615: Steve Palmer clatters into Spencer Prior to become the third player in referee Hugh Webb's notebook.

1621: The second half is fluctuating wildly as both sides begin to press for the breakthrough.

1622: QPR's gamble on playing Pacquette has not paid off, but Ian Holloway has another ace up his sleeve in substitute Andy Thompson, who replaces the youngster on the hour.

1628: Kevin McLeod's clever run is ended by a superb Kavanagh tackle just as Cardiff look set to open up.

1631: Weston lands awkwardly and appears to aggravate a calf injury, so substitute Gary Croft replaces the defender.

1633: Marc Bircham becomes the third QPR player to be booked following his trip on Peter Thorne.

1640: Cardiff striker Earnshaw is replaced by Andy Campbell, though the Bluebirds' top scorer looks unhappy at being hauled off with 11 minutes left. QPR bring on Tommy Williams for Gino Padula.

1649: Shittu and Furlong dive to block Thorne in front of goal and Cardiff appeal frantically for a late penalty as QPR scramble clear.

1652: Prior's defensive header falls well short but Thomson's resulting header drops over the bar.

1656: The full-time whistle sounds at the Millennium Stadium, so extra-time is needed.

1701: QPR get extra-time under way.

1704: Whalley nearly puts Campbell clear but Clark Carlisle makes a superb tackle.

1707: Campbell skips clear down the left and crosses to Whalley, but he can't make a proper connection in front of goal.

1715: QPR defender Carlisle makes a great run into the Cardiff box but heads wide from Gallen's floated cross.

1717: Prior's thumping header looks to have made the breakthrough from Kavanagh's free-kick but QPR keeper Day makes a superb save to deny the defender.

1720: Cardiff begin the second period of extra-time.

1724: Tommy Williams makes a dazzling run from midway inside his own half, but when he finds himself in the Cardiff penalty the defender fluffs his moment of glory and shoots wide of the near post.

1729: Cardiff 1-0 QPR
Carlisle's mistake, virtually his first in the game, allows Willie Boland to play a long ball forward and Shittu's hesitation allows Campbell to run clear and lob helpless keeper Day.

1735: Goalscorer Campbell is booked for kicking the ball away after winning a free-kick as Cardiff look to kill time in the final seconds of the game.

1737: Cardiff City are promoted to the First Division. Campbell's extra-time goal is enough to seal victory over QPR in a nail-biting play-off final in the Bluebirds' home city.
