Crewe 2-0 Barnsley

Crewe stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with a win that keeps them in touch with the Second Division promotion-chasing pack.

Central defender Steve Foster rose to head home Kenny Lunt's first-half free-kick and put the home side ahead with his third goal of the season.

Crewe continued to pose a threat from set-pieces and Barnsley goalkeeper Andy Marriott had to make two good saves to prevent Foster adding to his tally.

Barnsley did offer some attacking threat and Dean Gorre and Bruce Dyer were both denied by impressive stops from Crewe goalkeeper Clayton Ince.

However, Crewe finally sealed the win when Rodney Jack converted a close-range chance after racing clear.

Crewe: Ince, Wright, Walton, Foster, Tierney, Lunt, Brammer, Sorvel, Rix, Ashton, Jack. Subs: Bankole, Vaughan, Jones, Sodje, Miles.

Barnsley: Marriott, Mulligan, Flynn, Crooks, Gibbs, Gorre, Lumsdon, Gary Jones, Neil, Dyer, Fallon. Subs: Ghent, O'Callaghan, Barrowclough, Kay, Austin.

Referee: J P Robinson (E Yorkshire)
