Tranmere 1-1 Peterborough
Tranmere were held by Peterborough, with two substitutes stealing the limelight at Prenton Park. Rovers went ahead against the run of play in the 53rd minute when teenager Iain Hume, just two minutes after joining the action, headed the ball home powerfully from a free-kick by Gareth Roberts. Tranmere found themselves reduced to 10 men in the 82nd minute when skipper Graham Allen was sent off for diving, his second bookable offence having earlier been cautioned for a foul. Peterborough took full advantage. They sent on David Farrell in the 85th minute and two minutes later he ran 40 yards before powering an angled left-foot shot into the roof of the net. It was the least Peterborough deserved as twice in the first half their lively striker Andy Clarke hit the woodwork.
Tranmere: Achterberg, Connelly, Allen, Edwards, Nicholson, Taylor, Harrison, Jones, Roberts, Barlow, Proudlock. Subs: Gray, Hume, Hay, Olsen, Whitehead. Peterborough: Tyler, Joseph, Rea, Burton, Gill, Jelleyman, Shields, Hyde, Bullard, Andy Clarke, Allen. Subs: Farrell, Lee, Newton, Fenn, Semple. Referee: E Evans (Manchester)
