Crewe 0-1 Luton
Joe Kinnear's Luton continued their march up the Division Two table with an impressive win at promotion rivals Crewe. Top-scorer Steve Howard popped up at the far post with just six minutes left to drill home the winner. The ball ran to him in the box after Sol Davis' cross was blocked by a huddle of Crewe defenders. It was a painful moment for an Alex side that should have taken the lead in the 54th minute. Richard Walker headed over the bar from close range after Rob Hulse and Dave Brammer carved out an easy chance for the defender. Seconds later Hulse sent a low drive just past the post as Crewe upped the tempo. But Luton also looked dangerous on the break and Tony Thorpe sent a clever chip just wide of the target with Clayton Ince beaten. The result saw Luton take their tally to 19 from the last 21 points on offer.
Crewe: Ince, Wright, Foster, Sodje, Walker, Lunt, Brammer, Sorvel, Jones, Hulse, Jack. Subs: Bankole, Walton, Ashton, Rix, White. Luton: Berthelin, Skelton, Coyne, Boyce, Hillier, Davis, Spring, Brkovic, Robinson, Howard, Fotiadis. Subs: Emberson, Thorpe, Holmes, Kimble, Mansell. Referee: A Bates (Staffordshire)
