Stockport 2-3 Brentford
![]() Stockport manager Carlton Palmer was forced to play 17-year-old goalkeeper James Spencer and he was unable to prevent County from crashing to defeat against Brentford. Spencer was left helpless early on when left-back Anthony Tonkin miscued a back-pass to leave Mark McCammon free to toe-poke the ball home and give the visitors the lead. The home side nearly hit back immediately but Brentford goalkeeper Paul Smith was equal to a good shot from Luke Beckett, diving well to his right to turn the ball round the post. Beckett eventually put his side back on level terms with a powerful shot before McCammon grabbed his second goal of the game. Scott Marshall increased the advantage with a superb header from Michael Dobson's cross before Palmer pulled a goal back at the end.
Stockport: Spencer, Lescott, Challinor, Palmer, Tonkin, Gibb, Lambert, Fradin, Ellison, Burgess, Beckett. Subs: Coppinger, Daly, Clare, Briggs, McLachlan. Brentford: Paul Smith, Dobson, Marshall, Somner, Hunt, O'Connor, Fullarton, Hutchinson, Evans, Vine, McCammon. Subs: Constantine, Julian, Williams, Hughes, Peters. Referee: M Ryan (Lancashire).
