Mansfield Town slumped to a disappointing home defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town thanks to a Martin Smith double.

To make matters worse for the injury-hit Stags, midfielder Craig Disley was stretchered off in the second half with a head injury after a clash with Dwayne Mattis.

Huddersfield striker Jon Stead had signalled the visitors' intent early on when he blasted a 10-yard effort over the bar.

The 19-year-old came close again when Stags keeper Arjan Van Heusden denied him in the 13th minute, and he hit a shot wide 14 minutes later.

Mansfield improved after the break but a brief lapse saw Smith beat two defenders and Van Heusden before blasting home his third goal of the season in the 53rd minute.

Eight minutes later he smashed home his second from a Steve Jenkins cross.
