Crewe 0-1 Plymouth
Plymouth broke new ground as they beat Crewe to throw the home side's promotion bid off track and record their first ever win at the Alexandra Stadium. The goal came from debutant David Norris, on loan from Bolton Wanderers, who punished sloppy Crewe defending to break the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Norris ran 20 yards with the ball as the Crewe defence backed away before bursting into the penalty area and steering a shot beyond goalkeeper Clayton Ince. Crewe, who had a penalty appeal turned down in each half, went closest through captain Dave Brammer, whose low left-foot shot hit the base of the post in the 58th minute. Plymouth had to survive plenty of second-half pressure as Crewe's top scorer Rob Hulse spurned four presentable opportunities. French goalkeeper Romian Larrieu also made a fine save when he pushed away a diving header from Steve Jones as Argyle somehow survived a late onslaught.
Crewe: Ince, Sodje, Walton, Foster, Wright, Rix, Lunt, Brammer, Jones, Hulse, Jack. Subs: Bankole, Ashton, Sorvel, Walker, Miles. Plymouth: Larrieu, Worrell, Coughlan, Wotton, Aljofree, Norris, Friio, Adams, Hodges, Stonebridge, Sturrock. Subs: McCormick, Keith, Evans, Phillips, Lopes. Referee: F Stretton (Nottinghamshire).
