Brentford ended a run of three straight away defeats as first-half goals from Ibrahim Sonko and Rowan Vine secured victory against Northampton.

The unmarked Sonko headed Brentford into an early lead when he beat goalkeeper Lee Harper to Kevin O'Connor's free-kick.

But it took a great save from Paul Smith to deny Marco Gabbiadini an equaliser.

Top scorer Vine doubled Brentford's advantage when he got on the end of a header from Mark McCammon.

Harper saved his first effort but the striker swept home the rebound via the upright.

Derek Asamoah gave Northampton a glimmer of hope when he reduced the arrears and the substitute almost equalised a minute later but Smith was equal to his effort.
