Chesterfield 1-0 Tranmere

Stuart Howson scored his first goal of the season to punish wasteful Tranmere at Saltergate.

The visitors controlled the match for long periods but their finishing let them down and Howson's late strike condemned them to a sixth consecutive away league defeat.

The Spireites could count themselves lucky that Tranmere could not find a decent finish to match some impressive approach work.

Simon Haworth twice went close in the first half but the best chance fell to young striker Alex Hay, who blazed the ball over the crossbar from 12 yards.

Gary Jones also headed straight at goalkeeper Carl Muggleton and Tranmere were left to regret those missed openings when Howson touched home a Rob Edwards volley.

Tranmere almost snatched an equaliser but substitute Stuart Barlow shot just wide.

Chesterfield: Muggleton, Dawson, Blatherwick, Howson, Davies, Booty, Hudson, Rushbury, Edwards, Reeves, Brandon.
Subs: Burt, Ebdon, Richmond, Allott, O'Hare.

Tranmere: Achterberg, Taylor, Allen, Edwards, Harrison, Mellon, Jones, Connolly, Nicholson, Hay, Haworth.
Subs: Barlow, Sharps, Hume, Olsen, Whitehead.

Referee: M Fletcher (Worcestershire).
