A late strike from Graham Kavanagh gave Cardiff a deserved 1-0 victory over a determined Wycombe side at Ninian Park.

Just as it seemed Cardiff would have to settle for a point, Kavanagh collected a 79th minute rebound to fire a crisp shot into the corner of the net.

Peter Thorne struck both post and crossbar with first-half headers and Martyn Margetson made several crucial saves on his debut to keep Wycombe out.

Cardiff could have had an early penalty when Thorne was pulled back as he headed for goal, but referee Trevor Parkes waved play on.

Margetson, deputising for Neil Alexander who was away on Scotland duty, showed his class with two tremendous saves from Wycombe's bustling Andy Rammell.
