Huddersfield 0-1 Luton

A solitary injury-time strike from Steve Howard saw Luton leapfrog Huddersfield with their second league win of the season.

A dull match seemed destined to end goalless until a slip from defender Nat Brown on his home debut allowed substitute Andrew Fotiadis to square for Howard to prod home his seventh goal of the season from four yards out.

The result was harsh on Huddersfield who deserved at least a point despite failing to score for the third successive match.

The Terriers almost took the lead on 10 minutes when Kenny Irons rattled the crossbar from a free-kick before Kevin Gallacher's follow-up header was cleared off the line.

Luton themselves missed an excellent chance following another mistake from Brown, who misjudged a header allowing Dean Crowe to steal in and lob his shot over the crossbar.

In a slightly better second half Luton's appeals for a penalty were waved away when Emmerson Boyce tumbled in the box with Jon Dyson.

But as the game appeared to be fizzling out, Howard popped up to leave Huddersfield hovering at the wrong end of the table.

Huddersfield: Bevan, Jenkins, Brown, Dyson, Sharp, Schofield, Irons, Holland, Thorrington, Gallacher, Booth. Subs: Senior, Macari, Mattis, Stead, McDonald.

Luton: Emberson, Davis, Perrett, Coyne, Boyce, Hughes, Nicholls, Spring, Robinson, Crowe, Howard. Subs: Holmes, Fotiadis, Neilson, Skelton, Hillier.

Referee: F Stretton (Nottinghamshire)
