Northampton 1-0 Barnsley
Substitute Paul McGregor hit a late winner to earn 10-man Northampton a battling victory against a Barnsley side who had been on a four-match unbeaten run before kick-off. Town goalkeeper Lee Harper was their hero as he saved a 41st-minute penalty from Chris Lumsdon after Ian Sampson had been sent off for a clumsy challenge in the area. Harper produced another brilliant save on the hour-mark to deny Paul Gibbs as Northampton stood firm in the face of intense Barnsley pressure. McGregor headed the ball wide and Paul Trollope headed straight at Tykes goalkeeper Andy Marriott before the hosts broke the deadlock. Chris Carruthers crossed and McGregor picked his spot to earn three points.

Barnsley: Marriott, Austin, Morgan, Curle, Holt, Betsy, Gorre, Lumsdon, Gibbs, Sheron, Dyer. Subs: Flynn, Rankin, Ghent, Crooks, Mulligan. Referee: Andy Hall (Birmingham).
