Crewe 1-0 Cheltenham

Rodney Jack scored the only goal of the game as Crewe defeated Cheltenham in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

The former Torquay striker, starting his first game of the season, broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute to inflict Cheltenham's fourth defeat of the season.

The Saint Vincent international latched onto Kenny Lunt's incisive throughball before driving a low shot past goalkeeper Steve Book.

Cheltenham had passed the ball brightly in the opening half but failed to make the most of their opportunities.

Paul Brayson came closest for the visitors, forcing a good save out of Crewe keeper Clayton Ince in the 21st minute before shooting wide from a better position four minutes later.

Crewe had to be patient but carved out opportunities of their own for Rob Hulse and Dean Ashton before Jack's decisive strike.

Livewire Jack was a constant thorn in Cheltenham's side after the break and came close on a further three occasions, while Ashton also missed a good opportunity to make the game safe.

Crewe: Ince, Wright, Walker, Foster, Vaughn, Jack, Brammer, Lunt, Rix, Hulse, Ashton. Subs: Bankole, Sodje, Bell, Jones, Miles.

Cheltenham: Book, Howarth, Mike Duff, Walker, Victory, Williams, Yates, McAuley, Milton, Naylor, Brayson. Subs: Higgs, Griffin, Brough, Devaney, Finnigan.

Referee: D Gallagher (England).
