Port Vale ended their four-match losing run to claim a shock 1-0 win over Wigan at the JJB Stadium.

Ian Armstrong scored the only goal on the stroke of half-time when he struck a fine shot into the top corner past John Filan.

Andy Liddell and Nathan Ellington had Wigan's best efforts of the first half but Vale goalkeeper Mark Goodlad was equal to the task.

Goodlad tipped another Ellington effort round the post while at the other end Filan saved smartly from Stephen McPhee.

Goodlad capped an inspired display when he also denied Jason De Vos, who was also denied in the last minute by the Vale goalkeeper.
