Colchester 0-1 Brentford

Brentford maintained their unbeaten start to the season but were forced to battle for a narrow victory against Colchester at Layer Road.

Steve Whitton's side stumbled to their second successive defeat although they were unfortunate to end with nothing after a game which was decided by a penalty in first-half injury-time.

Danny Steele was harshly penalised for a foul on Bees striker Mark McCammon and Stephen Hunt stepped up to fire home from the spot.

Brentford were visibly lifted by the goal and dominated for much of the second half without creating many chances, although Leo Roget went close with a stinging shot which was well saved.

Colchester: McKinney, Keith, Johnson, Pinault, Warren, Izzet, Morgan, Coote, Bowry, White, Stockwell. Subs: Brown, Rapley, Steele, Odunsi, Opara.

Brentford: Paul Smith, Dobson, Sonko, Roget, Somner, Jay Smith, Hutchinson, McCammon, Vine, O'Connor, Hunt. Subs: Julian, Constantine, Chorley, Peters, Evans.

Referee: P Taylor (Hertfordshire).
