Luke Beckett's penalty miss cost Stockport their first win of the season as the Hatters drew against Notts County at Edgeley Park.

The striker had vowed never to take another penalty after missing twice from the spot last season against Rotherham and Manchester City.

But after being bundled down in the box by Notts defender Danny Stone on the stroke of half-time, he decided to take the penalty himself only to see his shot crash against the right-hand post.

The ball came flying back out to Ben Burgess, but the £450,000 summer signing from Blackburn was also denied by the woodwork, before the visitors cleared the danger.

Notts midfielder Marcel Cas had earlier squandered the best chance of the game when he blasted over from six yards after great work by Danny Allsopp down the left.

And then Allsopp himself missed a gilt-edged chance in the final minute when he spooned the ball over the bar from 10 yards.
