Barnsley 1-1 Cheltenham
Tony Naylor's late strike gave newly-promoted Cheltenham their first point in Division Two with a draw against Barnsley. The veteran striker equalised in the 86th minute with a 10-yard strike after Julian Alsop's delicate flick-on. Bruce Dyer had looked to have given Barnsley their first three points of the season with his opening goal. Dyer sent a 51st minute bullet header past Cheltenham keeper Steve Book following Kevin Betsy's left wing cross. Tykes midfielder Chris Lumsdon had gone close on the half hour mark with a 25-yard free-kick which came back off the angle of bar and post. Barnsley's Mike Sheron wasted two good chances before Cheltenham began to enjoy their best spell of the game. On 68 minutes Dean Gorre had to make a double block on the goal line from Mark Yates' initial effort and then to deny Alsop. Barnsley: Marriott, Austin, Flynn, Morgan, Gibbs, Betsy, Lumsdon, Crooks, Gorre, Dyer, Sheron. Subs: Ghent, Rankin, Mulligan, O'Callaghan, Ward. Cheltenham: Book, Howarth, Walker, Mike Duff, Victory, Williams, Finnigan, Devaney, Yates, Milton, Alsop. Subs: Higgs, Brayson, Naylor, Spencer, Jones. Referee: D Pugh (Merseyside).
