Jason Koumas produced a classy display, scoring one goal and creating two more, as managerless Tranmere won at Port Vale on the opening day.

Vale's pre-season optimism was torn apart by a combination of the highly-rated Koumas and some woeful defending.

Stephen Brooker put the home side in front after 25 minutes with a close-range finish - but five minutes before the break Rovers were on terms.

Koumas hammered home from 25 yards before laying on goals for Simon Haworth and Graham Allen either side of half-time.

Vale squandered good chances, with Stephen McPhee and Jon McCarthy the chief culprits.

But nine minutes from time a Michael Walsh slip allowed Haworth to sprint clear and score his second goal.
