Wigan's record signing Nathan Ellington made it two goals in two games to inspire his side to a win over Northampton.

The 1.2m striker, who was lively all afternoon, pounced in first-half stoppage time when he headed home Jason Jarrett's high through-ball.

Defender Jason De Vos had given Wigan a sixth-minute lead with a powerful header from Scott Green's corner.

And it was the outstanding Green who made the game safe when he fired the ball home in the 69th minute after following up a shot.

Despite the defeat, other results on the day ensured Northampton avoided relegation from Division Two.

Wigan: Filan, Jackson, McMillan, De Vos, De Zeeuw, Jarrett, Mitchell, Teale, Green, Liddell, Ellington. Subs: Stillie, Kilford, Nolan, Roberts, McGibbon.

Northampton: Welch, Marsh, Carruthers, Hope, Sampson, Hunt, Hunter, Hargreaves, Gabbiadini, Forrester, Parkin. Subs: Sollitt, Frain, Hodge, Asamoah, Dempsey.

Referee: M Cooper (Walsall)
