An own-goal by defender Shaun Maher condemned Bournemouth to defeat against Colchester and virtually ended their hopes of Second Division survival.

Maher turned a cross from Kevin Rapley into his own net in the 62nd minute in what was the visitors' only real attack of the second period.

Bournemouth desperately searched for an equaliser and went agonisingly close three times in the space of a minute as the clock ticked by.

Simon Brown saved brilliantly from a Neil Young header before tipping over Jason Tindall's 12-yard strike.

And the Cherries' frustration was complete when Derek Holmes saw his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Scott McGleish.

Colchester's best effort came in the first half when a clearance from Maher struck Kem Izzet and rebounded towards goal.

Bournemouth: Stewart, Young, Purches, Maher, Tindall, Elliott, Carl Fletcher, Hughes, Hayter, Feeney, Holmes. Subs: Menetrier, Thomas, Cooke, McAnespie, Foyewa.

Colchester: Brown, Keith, Duguid, Blatsis, Fitzgerald, Stockwell, Izzet, Pinault, Bowry, McGleish, Rapley. Subs: Knight, Coote, Morgan, White, Ross Johnson.

Referee: T Parkes (Birmingham).
