Stoke's hopes of snatching a last-gasp automatic promotion place were virtually ended by a 2-1 defeat at Oldham. The Potters faced an uphill task following the dismissal of Wayne Thomas in the 48th minute for two yellow cards. Oldham went in front in the 25th minute when Tony Carss headed his first goal of the season from a David Eyres corner. Stoke levelled in the 63rd minute when unlucky full-back Dean Holden could only deflect a Chris Iwelumo shot into his own net. But the Latics made sure of the points and their first win in seven games through Fitz Hall's winner. On his his home debut following a £25,000 move from non-League Chesham United, Hall headed home from close range.
