Cardiff's excellent run under Lennie Lawrence continued as they cruised to a comfortable win at Chesterfield which kept them firmly on course for the Division Two play-offs.

Chesterfield's defence was no match for the power of the Cardiff strikeforce and the final score could have been even more emphatic.

Leo Fortune West put Cardiff on their way after six minutes when he bundled in the ball from close range after a nonchalant backheel from Daniel Gabbidon.

And Andy Campbell struck the second goal on the half-hour mark with a low right-foot shot.

Peter Thorne twice missed good chances and Chesterfield cleared three headers off the line as the home side's inexperienced defence was torn apart.

The Spireites had few chances although Glynn Hurst was only just wide with a first-half header and Alan O'Hare had a 75th-minute effort cleared off the line.

But in between, there were few scares for Cardiff, who are now unbeaten in nine matches under Lawrence.

Chesterfield: Abbey, Buchanan, Payne, Booty, Howson, O'Hare, Innes, D'Auria, Burt, Hurst, Allott. Subs: Willis, Blatherwick, Parrish, Williams, Richmond.

Cardiff: Alexander, Weston, Young, Prior, Gabbidon, Legg, Boland, Kavanagh, Thorne, Fortune-West, Campbell. Subs: Bonner, Brayson, Earnshaw, Croft, Bywater.

Referee: M Clattenburg (Cramlington).
