Mickey Bell stole the show with a brilliant brace as promotion hopefuls Bristol City saw off Cambridge.

The left-back fired a curling free-kick past Lionel Perez from 25 yards in the eighth minute and followed up with an even better effort from distance to increase the lead 11 minutes later.

Cambridge never had the firepower to get back into the game and home goalkeeper Steve Phillips was not tested until the 87th minute when he kept out Ian Ashbee's shot.

City's new loan signing Harpal Singh made an impressive debut and forced Perez to save with his foot in the 54th minute.

Bristol City: Phillips, Carey, Coles, Hill, Burnell, Doherty, Tinnion, Singh, Bell, Peacock, Matthews. Subs: Stowell, Aaron Brown, Steve Jones, Amankwaah, Hulbert.

Cambridge Utd: Perez, Goodhind, Duncan, Angus, Murray, Guttridge, Wanless, Ashbee, Youngs, Revell, One. Subs: Marshall, Tudor, Tann, Jackman, Scully.

Referee: A Bates (Anon)
