Marco Gabbiadini scored one goal and made another as Northampton continued their surge towards Second Division safety with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Notts County.

The former Derby striker pointed Northampton towards a third successive victory with a 12th-minute strike from Jamie Forrester's cross.

Then when Gabbiadini was brought down in the area by Ian Richardson, Forrester made it 2-0 from the spot after 63 minutes.

There was a repeat performance from Forrester four minutes later but this time Nick Fenton was punished for bringing down Paul McGregor by a red card.

Miserable County were always second best and Northampton have now moved above them in the Second Division table.

Notts County: Garden, Fenton, Chilvers, Ian Richardson, Leam Richardson, Liburd, Owers, Caskey, Bolland, Heffernan, Hackworth.
Subs: Mildenhall, Nicholson, Brough, McNamara, Ireland.

Northampton: Welch, Hunter, Sampson, Burgess, Marsh, McGregor, Hunt, Hargreaves, Gabbiadini, Forrester, Parkin.
Subs: Hodge, Sollitt, Hope, Asamoah, Dempsey.

Referee: M Cowburn (Blackpool).
