Wrexham missed two penalties in the first four minutes, but still went on to record a win against Northampton.

Darren Ferguson scored the winner four minutes from time with a superb 30-yard free-kick to atone for his second-minute penalty miss.

The referee ordered a re-take and then Lee Trundle had his shot saved by goalkeeper Keith Welch.

Jamie Forrester put the Cobblers ahead after 13 minutes before skipper Brian Carey equalised just before half time.

Paul McGregor restored Northampton's lead just after the interval before Martyn Chalk equalised again with a successful penalty in the 56th minute.

James Hunt was sent off for elbowing Trundle and the game finished with Welch being substituted by Adam Sollitt after injurying his leg.

Wrexham: Walsh, Whitley, Carey, Hill, Holmes, Gibson, Chalk, Ferguson, Blackwood, Faulconbridge, Trundle. Subs: Rogers, Sharp, Morrell, Thomas, Phillips.

Northampton: Welch, Marsh, Burgess, Hope, Spedding, McGregor, Hunter, Hunt, Frain, Forrester, Gabbiadini. Subs: Sollitt, Parkin, Hodge, Carruthers, Asamoah.

Referee: H Webb (Rotherham).
