On-loan striker Chris Killen netted his sixth goal in seven games to secure Port Vale a win over league strugglers Bury.

Five bookings, four of them for the Shakers, told the story of a hard-fought first half which ended without a decent attempt on goal.

But the second period was much more open after Killen, loaned from Manchester City, rounded Paddy Kenny to finish off Stephen Brooker's excellent pass in the 58th minute.

Bury threw caution to the wind in the closing stages and almost grabbed a point as Jon Newby and Danny Swailes both went close.

Port Vale: Goodlad, Carragher, Cummins, Burton, Rowland, Brisco, McClare, Armstrong, Brooker, Killen, McPhee. Subs: Delaney, Dodd, Burns, Burgess, Byrne.

Bury: Kenny, Unsworth, Stuart, Collins, Redmond, Swailes, Reid, Forrest, Murphy, Newby, Lawson. Subs: Seddon, Clegg, Borley, Nelson, Syros.

Referee: R Furnandiz (Doncaster).
