QPR slumped to their first home defeat of the season with a dismal performance as struggling Northampton left Loftus Road with a win.

The warning signs had been there for Rangers as early as the second minute.

John Frain's corner was met by Daryl Burgess whose goal-bound effort was headed against his own crossbar by Matthew Rose.

The ball flew out to James Hunt who smashed the rebound against the post.

However, the goal that proved decisive was not long in coming.

On 11 minutes Marco Gabbiadini played a perfect pass to Paul McGregor on the right.

He was able to calmly square it into the middle where the unmarked Hunt was in pole position to tap in.

QPR threw on two extra strikers in the second half but hardly created a chance.

Their best effort came two minutes from time when substitute Richard Pacquette crossed from the right and Andy Thomson headed inches wide.

The visitors though could easily have added to their lead with Gabbiadini shooting over after going through in the first half.

And then after the break seeing a fierce shot superbly saved by Rangers goalkeeper Chris Day.
