Peter Taylor was treated to a fabulous first-half display from promotion-chasing Brighton in his first match in charge. The Seagulls stormed into a three-goal lead against Oldham inside 28 minutes with striker Lee Steele twice on target. The visitors came more into the game after the break but it was an unhappy return to Brighton for their manager and former Albion striker Andy Ritchie. The recalled Paul Rogers put the Seagulls in front after only seven minutes and Steele (14) doubled the advantage with a fine individual effort. Steele raced onto a through-ball from Bobby Zamora to fire the third after his initial effort was parried by goalkeeper Gary Kelly. Brighton were unlucky not to have added a fourth before the interval when a direct free-kick by defender Paul Watson came back off the crossbar. Brighton: Kuipers, Watson, Mayo, Cullip, Morgan, Rogers, Oatway, Brooker, Hart, Steele, Zamora. Subs: Crosby, Pitcher, Jones, Lehmann, Pethick. Oldham: Kelly, McNiven, Balmer, Holden, Prenderville, Tipton, Duxbury, John Sheridan, Gill, Corazzin, Eyres. Subs: Allott, Miskelly, Dudley, Richards, Rickers. Referee: L Cable (Woking).
