Wigan 1-1 Brentford
Lee McCulloch salvaged a point for Wigan just seconds after coming on as a second-half substitute against Brentford.
The £750,000 striker swept the ball home following a 66th minute long throw-in from Ged Brannan. But it was not the start that new Wigan manager Paul Jewell would have wanted. Brentford's goal was under siege for most of the game but the visitors went ahead with a freak goal in first-half injury time. A Paul Evans free-kick took a deflection off Ivar Ingimarsson and the ball looped over Wigan goalkeeper Derek Stillie and into the net. The Londoners' other Icelandic star - keeper Oli Gottskalksson - kept them in the game with a string of great saves to deny Andy Liddell twice and Gabor Bukran. McCulloch spared Wigan's blushes but last season's draw specialists must do something about their lack of goals if they are to be in promotion contention again.
Wigan: Stillie, Mitchell, De Vos, De Zeeuw, Nolan, Adamczuk, Bukran, Brannan, Kennedy, Liddell, Ashcroft. Subs: Tynan, McLoughlin, McCulloch, Roberts, Sharp. Brentford: Gottskalksson, Dobson, Ingimarsson, Powell, Anderson, Price, Evans, Mahon, Gibbs, Owusu, O'Connor. Subs: Smith, Partridge, Williams, Theobald, Hunt. Referee: P Jonlin (England)
