Tranmere 1-2 Bury
Relegated Tranmere started life in Division Two by falling to a shock 2-1 home
defeat at the hands of Bury.
The home side were not helped by the dismissal of striker Seyni N'Diaye in the 45th minute after he aimed a punch at Michael Nelson. Bury went ahead with a classic goal after four minutes when Jon Newby capitalised on a smart break from defence. Tranmere missed gilt-edged chances and twice hit the woodwork in the opening half. But they rallied in the second period and grabbed a 74th-minute equaliser through Andy Parkinson after a mistake by Matt Barrass. But Bury fought back for a winner after 83 minutes via a simple tap-in by skipper Paul Reid after he was set up by substitute Jason Jarrett.
Tranmere: Murphy, Hazell, Roberts, Challinor, Hill, Parkinson, Henry, Mellon, Flynn, N'Diaye, Barlow. Subs: Allison, Ralph, Yates, Hume, Gill. Bury: Kenny, Barrass, Armstrong, Redmond, Collins, Nelson, Billy, Forrest, Reid, Newby, Bhutia. Subs: Bullock, Unsworth, Murphy, Seddoni, Jarrett. Referee: G Frankland (Middlesbrough)
