Cambridge 0-0 Brighton
Bobby Zamora came close to giving newly-promoted Brighton victory at Cambridge United.
Zamora scored 31 goals last season and looked certain to win the game in the last minute when he ran onto a right-wing cross from Lee Steele. He beat goalkeeper Lionel Perez only to see his powerful header slam against the crossbar and bounce away. Brighton created more chances in a scrappy match despite having skipper Paul Rogers sent off just before the break for a foul which followed a yellow card for dissent. It took Cambridge 65 minutes to produce their only real strike on goal, Dave Kitson blasting a 12-yard volley straight at the keeper. Brighton should have taken the lead in a first half they dominated but Zamora headed into the keeper's arms after 33 minutes. And in stoppage time Paul Brooker sliced his shot wide from 12 yards when he was in the clear.
Cambridge Utd: Perez, Cowan, Walling, Angus, Warner, Fleming, Ashbee, Wanless, Traore, Kitson, Alcide. Subs: Marshall, Prokas, Richardson, Byrne, Duncan. Brighton: Kuipers, Watson, Cullip, Morgan, Jones, Hart, Rogers, Carpenter, Brooker, Lehmann, Zamora. Subs: Crosby, Melton, Steele, Oatway, Pethick. Referee: C Foy (St. Helens)
